Education is key to escaping generational poverty. For every year a kid stays in school, his or her future earning potential increases by 10% to 20%.
More kids than ever are now enrolled in school thanks to the progress made on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). These 8 global targets established in 2000 addressed extreme poverty in its many dimensions. Goal 2 focused on achieving universal primary education — and we nearly reached it.
Check out the impressive progress in the infographic below.
It’s so incredibly encouraging that primary school enrollment has reached 91% — 9 out of 10 kids in school! In Sub-Saharan Africa, where education is often not a priority among impoverished families, primary school enrollment increased by 20% between 2000 and 2015. And in Southern Asia, girls outnumber boys in school — with 103 girls for every 100 boys.
These successes prove it is possible to change our world for the better. (With the teamwork of compassionate and dedicated individuals like you, of course!)
