Perhaps no country in the world is as diverse as the United States of America.
Despite its prominence on the world political and economic scene, the United States is a young country. The vast majority of its inhabitants are descended from immigrants from every corner of the globe; as a result, the influences of many cultures are felt throughout American society.
While the United States as a whole tends to be economically prosperous, poverty is a real problem in many areas of the country. According to the US Census Bureau, in 2007 over 37.3 million people in the United States were living in poverty.
