When Christopher Columbus reached the shores of Honduras in 1502, he reportedly said, “Thank God we have escaped these treacherous depths!” He was referring to the deep waters off the northern coast, but from then on, the country has gone by the Spanish word for “depths” – that is, Honduras.
It’s an ironic name considering that three-fourths of its surface area is covered by mountains. But Honduras is a country characterized by highs and lows.
From sweltering temperatures to violent hurricanes, Honduras is all over the map when it comes to nature. While it's highly regarded for excellent scuba diving along the coral reefs of the Bay Islands, the untarnished landscape of the Mosquito Coast, and the impressive Mayan ruins of Copán, the country is no less plagued with poverty. |

With a population of 7.6 million people, Honduras remains one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere. Just over half of the population lives below the poverty line, and unemployment hovers near 30 percent, even as many international businesses continue to open manufacturing plants in the ever-expanding city of San Pedro Sula.
The original banana republic, Honduras is a beautiful country with a history of hardship – which makes sponsorship that much more important. |
