Guatemala
More than 31,000 sponsored children

Some call it “The Land of Fire and Water.” Some call it “The Country of Everlasting Spring.” No matter how you describe it, Guatemala is nothing short of spectacular.

The name of the country comes from two Mayan words: Quauhtemallan, which means “Land of trees,” and Uhatezmala, or “Mountain that throws fire.” The names are perfect for a country which boasts a verdant landscape full of volcanoes that still rumble and cough with activity. Their powerful presence may even contribute to the reputation Guatemalans have for being humble, shy, spiritual and respectful of others.

Life can be volatile for Guatemalans. Youth make up more than half of the population, and half of those live in dire poverty. Millions lack access to health care, and of all the countries in Central America, Guatemala has the lowest life expectancy, the highest rate of infant mortality, and the highest occurrence of chronically malnourished children.

Yet, despite its difficulties, Guatemala remains rich in heritage and its people gracious in spirit. And sponsorship is delivering a measure of change every bit as monumental as the mountains and modern problems that overshadow its neediest children and families.
