Romantic beaches, luxury resorts and a relaxing island culture…merengue music and dance…palm trees and coconuts…coral diving in the Caribbean…the place in the Americas where Christopher Columbus landed on his first voyage in 1492…
Welcome to the Dominican Republic!
Located on the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola, the Dominican Republic is a mere 600 miles from Miami, Florida. From sea-level to its highest point – Pico Duarte, which towers at 10,000 feet – this island nation has an abundance of natural resources.
Nearly 30 percent of the land is viable for crop production…and agriculture remains the primary occupation of Dominicans. Sugar cane, coffee, cocoa, tobacco and bananas are among the primary crops grown here.

Despite strong agricultural, telecommunications, manufacturing and tourism industries, more than 15 percent of the population remains unemployed. After strong growth in the economy during the 1990s, it took a downturn in 2003-2004 before recovering again in recent years.
Although poverty remains deeply entrenched in many areas, recent trade agreements are expected to help sustain further economic growth. |
