Relief Begins to Flow for Survivors in Haiti

(Please scroll down to see previous alerts)

Two weeks after an earthquake hit Haiti, U.S. and United Nations troops were helping lead recovery efforts. Although at least 130 people have been rescued from the wreckage, as many as 200,000 lost their lives in the 7.0 quake.

As attention in Haiti turns from rescue to relief and recovery, a massive international effort is underway. Getting food and water, medical supplies and temporary shelter to the estimated 1.5 million who have been left homeless is now the top priority.

Although Children International does not have operations in Haiti, our organization and our caring supporters recognize the depth of this disaster and the humanitarian crisis it has left behind. We are therefore accepting donations and directing them to trusted non-profit agencies working in Haiti. Donated funds will be earmarked for agencies working on medium- to long-term aid.

To make a donation, LOGIN or CREATE AN ACCOUNT. You may also call us toll-free at 1-800-888-3089 to speak with a Sponsor Representative about making a donation.

Thank you for your continued compassion.

Strong Aftershock Frightens Survivors

(Please scroll down to see previous alert)

A powerful 5.9-magnitude aftershock rattled Haiti early Wednesday morning, just as relief efforts and medical aid began reaching large numbers of survivors. More than a week after the initial earthquake, it was the strongest aftershock yet to strike the ravaged nation.

Reports of further damages and injuries are still being evaluated.

Relief and recovery efforts have been badly hampered by the original earthquake’s destruction of Haiti’s minimal infrastructure.

If you’d like to help victims of the earthquake, Children International will direct donations to trusted non-profit agencies working in Haiti. Donated funds will be earmarked for agencies working on medium- to long-term aid.

As reports of the disaster in Haiti begin to shed light on the magnitude of the suffering there, the international community is mobilizing a massive relief and recovery effort.

Officials state that 2 million people were within the epicenter of the 7.0 earthquake that shook Haiti’s capital and much of the surrounding area, and tens of thousands are feared dead. It is estimated that as many as 3 million people have been affected.

Although Children International does not have operations in Haiti, President Jim Cook has said that the scope of the disaster is such that, “We are an organization that cares deeply about the plight of people. In addition, many of our caring sponsors feel the same way and look to us to help them help those struck by this calamity.”

If you’d like to help victims of the earthquake, we will direct donations to trusted non-profit agencies working in Haiti. Donated funds will be earmarked for agencies working on medium to long-term aid.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with the victims in Haiti, their families, and those helping to relieve their suffering.

Thank you for your compassion and continued support.

Earthquake Devastates Haiti

A powerful earthquake – measuring 7.0 in magnitude – struck southwest of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, on Tuesday, January 12. Most of the capital is said to have been destroyed in the quake, and thousands are feared dead or injured.

The Caribbean nation, which shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic, is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere. The international community is rushing to provide aid and assistance.

The earthquake – the strongest to hit the island in 200 years – appears to have largely spared the eastern two-thirds of the island, which makes up the Dominican Republic, where Children International sponsors more than 27,000 children.

Our staff in the Dominican Republic report that the quake was felt throughout the entire island, but there does not appear to be any damage to agency buildings or any disruptions in sponsorship activities. We have no reports of injuries to Children International staff, sponsored children or their families.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims in Haiti and we wish the aid workers bringing assistance to the victims the best. To that end, we will be channeling aid in the form of supplies or monetary contributions through organizations on the ground in Haiti.
