Strengthening Roots in Villa Alemana

After 30 years of delivering sponsorship assistance in Chile, Children International has built its first new community center in the municipality of Villa Alemana. Known as the La Flor de Tilo Center in reference to the linden tree flower, the new facility features medical and dental exam rooms, a library and computer resource center, a meeting room and a playground, with plenty of space to serve the needs of over 5,000 children in the sponsorship areas of both Villa Alemana and Quilpué.

“The Magic of Soy”

Some 900 families of undernourished sponsored children in Barranquilla’s Nutritional Rehabilitation Club were provided with soy beans and lentils to help improve their diets and maintain their children’s age-appropriate height and weight. The families also received a cookbook called “The Magic of Soy” and a food guide with illustrated examples of how to prepare recipes that were practiced during the Club’s workshop on soy-based food preparation.
Mothers of sponsored children received packets of soy beans and lentils to prepare healthier meals for their families and combat malnutrition.

Former Sponsored Youth Takes Top Prize

Former sponsored youth Diego Vera was recognized for his outstanding role in the community by Guayaquil’s NOBIS Foundation, a social development group that works to improve the lives of local residents. Diego received one of NOBIS’ prestigious “Ecuador Triumphant” awards for his work as a Children International tutor, his performance as the president of the local Youth Council and an International Youth Conference delegate, as well as his excellent academic performance. “I think I prove that when youth work with a team...and in my case Children International...one can move forward and succeed,” remarked Diego.

Honduras
Youth Test the Waters of Leadership

Members of our Honduras Youth Council enjoyed a rare reprieve from their country’s turbulent dispute over the presidency when they gathered at a water park in San Pedro Sula for some fun and leadership training. The youth planned projects they’d like to carry out in the year ahead and discussed ways they could be a positive presence in their communities, while serving as role models to younger sponsored children.

A Birthday Bash, Bengali Style

Sponsored children with birthdays in November got to celebrate the special occasion at India’s largest retail store last month. Big Bazaar invited 29 children from our Sahay sponsorship program to an anniversary celebration of their grand opening. Mexico
Partnering for Progress

The year will end on a positive note for more than 2,300 sponsored children who benefited from nutritional care at our community center in Tonalá, Mexico. We recently added a nutrition clinic to the center with support from the Walmart Foundation. The clinic offers nutrition workshops, which teach children and parents good dietary habits and help rehabilitate children who suffer from severe malnutrition.

Philippines
A Head Start on the Holiday

Thanks to contributions from sponsors like you, children and youth in Legazpi got to visit the largest mall in Legazpi and pick out new clothes for Christmas. With more than 75,000 sponsored children in the Philippines, it’s imperative that we get a head start on the holidays, so our agencies host gift distributions at local malls. Sponsored children and youth not only get to pick out the items they like best, they also get to do something fun and out of the ordinary.

Sharing Smiles Throughout the Community

Our sponsorship agency in Little Rock, Arkansas, recently received a $25,000 donation from the Walmart Foundation to purchase a van for our school-based Future Smiles Dental Clinic. The van will make it possible for staff to transport students from seven different elementary students to the dental clinic. The clinic was also awarded a $50,000 grant from Blue Cross Blue and Shield to continue providing quality care for low-income children throughout the community.

Zambia
The Sponsorship Wall of Fame

Signed cards from sponsors who contributed to the Lifeline Food Program are proudly displayed on the wall of the nutrition room at our community center in Chibolya for children to see and admire. Approximately 190 children in Chibolya are currently participating in nutritional rehabilitation. The cards are a feast for the eyes, while the food they eat helps replenish their health.

Lifeline Food cards signed by sponsors deck the halls of the Chibolya community center in Zambia.
