Summer 2009

It’s time to go back to school. And kids everywhere must be groaning at the thought.
In the communities where we work, the idea of returning to school after a long break might make children cringe a bit, too, but it surely gives them hope at the same time. Hope that they can learn important lessons that will help steer them past poverty. In this issue we take a closer look at education, focusing on the role schools play in bringing that hope to bear in “The Way Out.”
Also in this issue...as gangs ravage the streets of Guatemala City, Guatemala, one brave teen is standing up and doing something. Check out “In Times of Trouble” to see him in action. In the story “Salvaged Lives,” take a few moments to read about a brother and sister who once scavenged the local dump for treasure, but found real value in sponsorship. And in “Going Green in India,” learn how youth are helping their community face up to their environmental challenges.
Much more awaits in this issue.
