Foundation Donates 5,000 Books to Children

From El Diario La Libertad Newspaper in Colombia

In order to support the National Bilingualism Program, the Amigos de los Niños Foundation donated 5,000 English textbooks to students at 17 schools located in strata one and two. The books will be used as teaching tools in the schools attended by low income children.

The event took place in the Nicole Lyn Anderson Community Center, located on Elías Mundi Avenue #30-115, next to the Red Cross, and was attended by Marjorie Quintero, chief of Educational Quality of the Ministry of District Education, and foundation director Hermelinda Guarín.

To ensure good use of the books, the non-profit organization headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri, will offer a training session for the teachers at the schools benefitted by the donation.

The training will be led by Iván Ballestas, exam supervisor from the Britannic Council for the Caribbean Region, and Elizabeth Vides, official from the Ministry of Education for the formation of teachers within the National Bilingualism Program.

Each school received books related to the different educational projects in which they have been previously trained so that they can complement the work they have been carrying out with the students. A large portion of the books is comprised of children’s literature, as well as algebra, mathematics, statistics, geometry, reading and writing, natural science, social science, and business administration. Other advanced textbooks were donated to the Piloto del Caribe library.

The National Bilingualism Program plans on meeting the national needs in terms of English, and it aspires to create teachers and primary, middle, and high school students capable of responding to a new bilingual environment. It also promotes and protects the management of other languages within ethnic, afro-colombian, and border populations. In terms of fluency in English, the goal is to allow members of the educational system to develop communication abilities at these levels, listed as intermediate and sufficient within the international context.

The benefitted schools are the Colegio Alemán and the District Educational Institutions Lestonaac, Jesús Maestro de Fe y Alegría, Simón Bolívar, Instituto Educativa Técnica de Rebolo, Alexandar Von Humboldt, Sofía Camargo de Lleras, Nueva Granada, San Miguel Arcángel, Carrizal, Siete de Abril, Despertar del Sur, Antonio José de Sucre, Manuel Elkin Patarroyo, Carlos Meisel, La Milagrosa de Fe y Alegría and Las Malvinas Cultural Center.
